Variations of a Space: Introduction

Function confined to modest spatial bounds is the logistical challenge which initially defined my interest in small spaces. And so when I moved into my first apartment, I was perfectly content taking the smaller of the two rooms, discovering its discreet potential as we both evolved. It took quite a few years to feel the space was functionally defined, and it went through several renditions of desk exodus & bed resizing - liberated in scope to accommodate any of my activities and in turn reigned in to serve sleep solely - but eventually it settled to this, somewhere in the middle: \

bedroom

\ A bedroom like many others. A bed, a desk, plenty of books, & speakers that fill the room (perhaps the most essential).

And so as I begin a more ‘serious’ inquiry into space I feel that working with the vessel that I am already so intimately familiar with will be fertile ground for free play. Additionally, due to obvious practical concerns (unfortunate) all of my design will exist solely in theoretical space which will allow me to answer to fantasy more readily.

This project “Variations of a Space” will aim to fill a vessel in manners that correspond to the recent concerns of my living ‘research’. Starting out, I will establish 4 variations that exist in the respective quadrants of this map:

Dynamism & Staticism. Abundance & Scarcity.
