Spatial Privatisation
The project of neoliberalism has always managed to construct an increasingly isolated sense of self, emphasizing individual movement to the point that it has eroded our sense of collective well being. This has manifested as the dismantling of public institutions & third spaces, social media algorithms made just for you, and an almost complete dissolution of local businesses - local patronage in general. An incredible tool at transforming us all into distinct units of capital more alienated and impotent as citizens than ever. The privatization of space, namely in the erosion of public space, is what I feel most compelled to diagnose.
Perhaps that is why urban dwelling is almost non negotiable for me so long as I am capable of doing so, I will remain - though urban America & beyond pose significant paywalls.
There is an enormous sense of ability that comes from the access to multiple modes of transportation that urban environments typically suggest, posing new opportunities, creating tangible space
